Halloween

IMG_2685

I’m getting a bit excited to decorate for Halloween, but that is still a ways off and really neither here nor there (though those paper bag and bar-of-soap pumpkins my kids made last year were pretty great). BUT, tonight at dinner the kids were talking about trick-or-treating. Mike said, “I’m going to be giving out homemade caramel popcorn balls,” then he looked at me with eyebrows raised and added, “with needles in them.” I told him that that was interesting because I’d actually planned on giving out caramel apples filled with nails. Then I nearly started to cry because I was laughing so hard when I told Mike and the kids about how, one year, in elementary, the local hospital gave us special trick-or-treat bags that we could use and then take to the hospital afterwards to have our candy x-rayed. The kids didn’t seem to understand what on earth all of this was about (though my tears of laughter did make Abe and Daisy laugh), but that’s because they live in a safer time – a time when you don’t have to fear sweet old ladies filling homemade goodies with razors and nails for you to bite into, a time when you can safely trust in your pre-wrapped miniature Snickers and Reeses peanut butter cups. Only . . . oh dear. I just remembered I have a kid with peanut allergies. I guess Halloween can never truly be safe after all.

Guess what? I heard some designer say, "It is NOT time for Halloween, no matter how much WalMart wants you to think it is." And guess what? I don't care. We had a nice cool week last week (only 70s in the morning with maybe 90 in the late afternoon) but this week is hot again (currently 104). I am tired of summer and the kids are in school and I want fall. So I got out my Halloween decorations today. I don't care what anybody thinks.
Oh, and by the way. Go to pinterest.com and ask for an invite. Then we can all share fun fall decorating ideas and every single other thing. Its going to be fun fun fun!

WHat? Where did you grow up?! I thought Utah was safe from those crazy little old ladies who put razors in delicious Halloween goodies. I certainly never heard of them in the Northwest. We just had people who tried to drug our candies - much safer.

PS - Whatever happened to you responding to all of our cute little comments? Half the fun of posting here is you admiring and laughing over how clever I am. I need attention! (Because we all know you don't have anyone vying for yours over there)

I repent of my behavior. Because yes, yes, you are above and beyond witty and clever and wonderful in all you say and do. It is true. I tend to think that nobody ever really pushes the button to have comments forwarded and so sometimes I feel silly typing responses here like maybe I am typing away to myself . . . kind of like talking to an imaginary friend. BUT, since I know you are apparently not imaginary, I will say, yah, why on earth would the big fear be to find a nail in our apple. Chances are you'd bite it and be like "ow. Hey there is a nail here". But it must have been a real and terrifying fear if the hospital was willing to x-ray our treats . . . AWESOME.
