Surprising Situations

One of the cool things about being a mom is you constantly find yourself in the most surprising situations, situations you just never really considered experiencing before children came your way. I call them “surprising,” but they shouldn’t be. In fact, every time one of these situations occur it should come as no surprise at all.

For example, today I was at Old Navy holding a bunch of clothes. I wasn’t planning on buying them all, merely hanging on to them while I considered. Unfortunately, I was also holding a certain 10 month old who was considering something totally different. She was considering throwing up the meal she’d recently eaten. Soon enough, she decided the best course of action would be to avoid the sparkling clean floor, opting to release her meal upon the moppy looking pile of clothing I was holding instead. Somehow it managed to get on pretty much every article. What was I to do? The only thing I could have possibly used to clean it would have been more of the store's clothing. Certainly I didn’t feel that sticking them back on the racks would be honest. And telling the store clerk, “Excuse me but these clothes seem to have throw up on them, would you mind if I traded them?” seemed an improper course as well. I was left with buying the clothes as the only suitable option, which was only made awkward by the fact that someone had to handle them in order to ring them up. Although polite, she didn’t seam to overly relish the task.

There is some good news in all of this – I got to bring home more cute clothing for my kids than I otherwise might have purchased. On the downside, it all had to be scrubbed free of throw-up. Everything has its price I suppose. Luckily, most of these interesting situations can eventually be looked upon with a little laughter (except for the time 15 month old Goldie screamed for three straight hours on a single flight, finally screaming herself into such hysterics that she threw up – I have never felt to laugh upon that . . . ).

that is funny that you just bought all of the clothes. but what else could you do? i don't know. i would have felt too bad to just put them back, to, so you did the right thing. and goldie on the flight...sad...andre used to gag sometimes when he screamed a lot of cried super heard and one time, not too long ago actually, at a friends house he actually did throw up when he was really mad at me and started screaming. it just made me mad because then i not only had a tantrum-ing child but also throw up on me and on their floor to clean up.

wow Nacho I guess you did the right thing. Sometimes the decisions aren't as easy as black and whites, sometimes they're grey,(with chunks in them!)

Oh no! Those situations are the most awkward thing ever. I can only picture the look on your face as you contemplated your course of action. I think it's very kind/honest that you decided to buy all the clothes. Most people would have put them down on the spot and walked out of the store without a second thought. My sister Melissa used to work at Old Navy, so I'm sure she'll weigh in on this fact. That store always looks like a tornado has just blown through, even when the employees have been diligently putting stuff back on the racks for hours. Ana threw up once after having a shot at the doctor's office and it was the same situation...all down my back and all over their floor. However, those nurses deal with stuff like that everyday, so they cleaned it up with no problem. Unlike the time we were at Dee's in Ogden and she did the same thing all over the table while we were eating and I mean ALL over. The Dee's employees didn't seem as un-shaken as the nurses at the doctor's office. Of course, she is my child, so naturually she'll be prone to throwing up frequently, as we all know that I have that lovely trait.

That is very sad! Also interesting that this is the second post I've read today about throw up. My friend Jen went on a camping trip and had a bad throw up story also. Anyhow, as Jessica previously mentioned I am an Old Navy alumni. (or maybe alumna, I'm not sure of the proper terminology!) Believe me,if those employees have worked there for any extended period of time they have seen worse than that! Sad, that it had to happen to you though.

You poor thing. I can't even imagine, but you never know. You really had no choice, I hope you had a bunch of cute clothes that you liked for them and had them in the right sizes!!! I bet that was one of the most expensive throw-ups you have ever experienced.

Thank you all for your condolences. It is interesting, listening to some of you, to realize just how often "throw-up" is the substance of these "surprising motherhood situations" It did give me some relief to know that Old Navy employees have seen worse -- perhaps, for example, the time one of my kids pulled over our cart, with our newborn, with an entire rack of clothes over??
Anyway, I now just find myself wishing I'd been holding A LOT more clothing -- as then I could have justified an even bigger spending spree to Mike.

Next time you go shopping with Penny - grab lots of things that would look good on me - and keep them right in front of her mouth. Thanks!

Hee hee that is such a good story. My goes something like this. I hate the carpet in this old house. I feed Layla carrots and then let her go a crawlin. O yeah, now we will really have to put the hard wood floors in. O I am so so evil. Love ya, meg
