Potato Salad . . . and Other News

I bought us one of those chicken dinners at Albertsons last week. I’ve never done that before, but it was late on a Saturday and we’d been doing yard work all day (of course by “we” I mean mostly Mike . . . it’s nice to be married so I can use that collective “we” whenever it suits me) so it seemed like a nice way to avoid making dinner. The best part about it was that I got to choose a side container of potato salad. I love potato salad. I think it is just plain delicious, and I fancy that under different circumstances (circumstances that I will explain shortly) I might have become expert at making the dish. I hear it takes some effort, but I think I would have found it worth the reward. Alas, my circumstances are this: Mike does not like mayonnaise, miracle whip, or anything even remotely related. Our kids have followed suit, and even Penny seemed insulted when I gave her a few potato pieces out of my salad. Perhaps its hereditary -- the affliction is rather wide spread in Mike’s family. Some of his siblings might have escaped this loathing of such a pleasant condiment, but I think most of them back Mike up 100%. Of course, it isn’t totally fair to say it is hereditary as that would indicate this abhorrence came from his parents -- sensible people who I’m sure would never turn their noses up at a good potato salad (am I right, Gayle?). So, who knows. The case still stands that I am seldom able to enjoy something as tasty as potato salad – it is just not that fun to make a large bowl of something all for your self . . . although, I did have a grand time eating that container of potato salad all by myself (and I did eat every last bite of it before the night was through). I’m not sure it is super healthy with all of its tasty artery clogging mayo, but I justified the occasion by how rarely it occurs.

Anyway, at the store today, I thought, “why must it be so rare? Saturday was grand!” So I rushed to the deli and purchased yet another container (which I ate most of). Now, I am feeling a bit regretful as my stomach seems to be in mild protest of what I have done; and I am wondering if this sudden craving for potato salad is simply pregnancy related instead of a longing for what I have been deprived of all these many years. Either way, a lengthy post about potato salad wasn’t how I intended to announce my PREGNANCY to the blogging world at large, but now that it has happened, I expect all of my friends who read this to give me congratulatory comments (and you family who already know are welcome to just comment on potato salad).

P.S. Awhile back I had posted about being sick and craving some weird items that my dear husband picked up for me. Both Tash and Sarah N. said something in my comments section hinting at pregnancy, and yes, you were both right! I was pregnant at that time -- though I think the sickness was unrelated as I usually don’t get sick when pregnant (I know, I know, I’m so sorry to all of you who do!). Anyway, good guessing girls, and I am glad no one else picked up on those comments as I wasn’t ready to tell!!

What exciting news for you! Yipee for being pregnant! Although I must concur with you husband, I am not a big fan of mayo stuff either. Then again I'm not a fan of a lot of stuff, since I hold the title of "World's Pickiest Eater." Congrats again!

As a fellow Harris in-law, I share your sentiments on a good potato salad. (And there are some good hereditary genes in there because Grandma Emma makes a pretty mean potato salad!) What is wrong with these Harrises and Mayo/Miracle Whip?? I can't count the number of times I've made myself my own bowl of potato salad and ate it in solitude. However, congratulations on the pregnancy. We are excited for you.

Troy, I laughed out loud at eating a bowl of potato salad "in solitude" it seemed so lonely -- not just the eating of the salad, but it expressed so well the entire feeling of alienation that comes with enjoying miracle whip in the society we've been placed in. However, your talk of making yourself a bowl of potato salad sounded so simple that I began to think perhaps there is an easy recipe that might encourage me to feel fine about making it even if it is to enjoy alone?? If so, please please share. And please make some for our next Harris gathering. Certainly there are enough in-laws now to enjoy it??

I would thoroughly enjoy potato salad at our next reunion, as it is also frowned upon in my house! After Greg and I were first married, he saw that I had bought some Mayonnaise (as any sensible person would)and he told me he was offended by the sight of it in the fridge! I am glad to hear that this is not only a trial for me, but also for you and Troy. Maybe we could have a meal just for in-laws with all kinds of things like Miracle whip, cream cheese, onions and any other "offensive" condiments...because we never get the chance to eat them otherwise.

Well, I know about the baby but I'm still going to say HOORAY!!!!! Another baby gets to have you and Mike for parents! Yeah! That is good for our world!

Potato salad. I make a great one. I don't like the kind from the store very much but mine is simple and delicious and luckily for me Jason will eat anything and he does particularly like potato salad. Call me and I will tell you my most delicious and simple recipe, which includes eggs and i know you like a good deviled egg.

Yes, Shan, give me your recipe at once.

And Rhonda, I am all for this in-law dinner . . . especially if we can also add some items with sour cream and maybe even cream of mushroom base (like those cheesy potatoes).

I want to see I KNEW IT!!! I don't know that you can say it wasn't pregnancy related though, you never know. So, when are you due? I really shouldn't have read your post on fast Sunday because it made me even hungrier, and now I am craving some delicious potato salad. What am I to do?

I'm so glad that Wesley realized long ago that your name was within the word pregNANCY. It's still my favorite thing of all time. Hopefully you don't become fool-hardy once again and think that you can just go without pain medication or any type of epidural.

While I believe Mike is probably the nicest of nice, I have to think he is a tad crazy for not liking condiments such as Miracle Whip (best on turkey & tuna sandwiches) and Mayo (especially good as a base for potato or macaroni salad). I'm glad you have every excuse to be eating whatever your heart desires right now.

Congrats are definitely in order! And I do remember wondering if you were pregnant on the post about being sick, with cravings, but I thought it was much too obvious of you to say those things if you really were pregnant and didn't want the word out yet! Funny! I'm especially excited for you!!! Yaaaaay! Now about this potato salad craving. I always crave a good potato salad in the summer time, pregnant or not, but it takes so much time and effort to make that by the time I get done making it I don't really want it any more. So potato salad made by someone else is always better in my mind. Eggs are a must!

Congratulations to you! Although I must say the Jones Girls are 2 for 3 when it comes to hating Mayo and/or Miracle Whip. I am with Melissa. However, I will eat potato salad even though I know it contains mass quantities of Mayo. Strange but true.

CONGRATS!! Since the word is out in the blogging world... does this mean it's out in the real world too? I'm so happy for you guys!

Nancy said...

Hey Missy, yes, it is now free info. as I announced it in YW during "sunshine and rain" :) I wanted to wait longer, but people were starting to speculate, so I figured it was best to tell.

P.S. For those of you wondering, my due date is Dec. 5th.

Heeeeere's Nancy's baby!

Yep - stoked for you. Maybe this one will like potato salad? Start 'em young! Jon's turned my kids against me . . . . giving them pickles at such a young age (YUCK!). So, not only can I NOT kiss him for the 2 days following- I can't be around THEM either!!! OH the horror! Ohhh the stench!!! I can even smell it in their skin. bleckhhhh!
I did try to take one for the team last week - as he was feeding everyone pickles . . . and so I surrendered so that I could be around them - poisoning myself by taking a bite (share and share alike). Nearly gagged - then spit it out - rinsing my tongue and combing it with my hand. gag, gag, gag! Yuck! The sacrifices one makes for love and family!

Mmmm . . . pickles. You should live with my family. They won't go near the poor tastied up cucumbers, but the first time I was ever pregnant (even before I knew I was) I thought, "to heck with this no pickles in the house business, pickles are the greatest!" and I've enjoyed them ever since (though mostly at the first of pregnancy).
