The Loser at Quirks

Oh I am so sad. A friend recently posted “six unspectacular quirks” about herself . . . then “tagged” my sister who did the same and then tagged me. I am not sad because I got tagged. I think the word “tag,” when it comes to making someone write about something on their blog, sounds a little silly, but the process itself is fun. I like to be given a topic or some questions to answer all about little old me me me. I am sad though because I don’t think I have a single quirk.

That word, “quirk” just keeps going through my head, “Quirk, quirk? Quirky? Quirk.” like somehow I will become quirky if I just think that word over and over. Being quirky really means you are cool. It means you are unique and have little things you do that others shake their heads or laugh at but in an adoring fashion as they think, “Oh, you are so fun. You have your own cool little you things that make you so you and I wish I had that quirk so people would think I was so cute and all my own little person.” Sigh. Don’t you all remember once when I tried to think of just plain old THINGS about me? Not even special quirks -- just some simple interesting things. All I could come up with was that I have TMJ and am allergic to Brazil nuts. Quirk quirk quirk. I am going to go downstairs now and ask Mike if I have any quirks.

I’m back. He’s no use. Besides several smart alec comments like, “Is a bun a quirk? It seems quirky,” and then rubbing his forehead and repeatedly saying, “Let’s think. Hmm. Lets think,” and coming up with nothing, he said, “I’ll observe you over the next day and identify any quirks.” At least I am now in a chuckling mood because of my very bad husband so having no quirks only seems medium bad. Well, I will just try to think of ANY six things about me and maybe I can make them sound quirky (and later, when I suddenly am like, “Hey!! I forgot about that quirk! I do have a quirk!” I will post it).

1. I choke a lot. Can something be a quirk when it is a physiological issue? I think quirks are little habits or preferences or ways you always do things, and I definitely don’t try to make a habit of choking so it probably doesn’t count. I do choke often though -- probably at least weekly -- especially if I am eating chicken, potatoes or bread. It really is no fun and I don’t think I just eat too fast because I believe some of my siblings have this same problem and my older brother had to have a tube stuck down his throat to stretch it out once.

It is the next morning now. I tried to explain to Abe what a quirk is and then asked him if I have any quirks. What he said will count as #2.

2. I have a lot of girls; and I always have to shower before we go somewhere. Cool that he thinks those are quirks. Sadly, as any friends who come across me in the morning out shopping can attest, I definitely don’t always “shower before we go somewhere.”

3. I really like apple slices with peanut butter and mini marshmallows on them. You can see I am floundering for quirks here. In general though I do go through cyclic spells of food cravings. When I was pregnant with Abe a co-worker told me that the weird foods I always brought to work had given her no clue because I always ate weird things. It might be canned peas and carrots, key lime pie, or (like recently) that gooey golden grahams/chex mix treat that I have been making pretty much every week.

4. I love makeup (alright, I’ve totally given up on even trying to be quirky, I am simply trying to get through this list of SIX things!). Eye makeup in particular makes me very happy. I love to mess around with it and would love to put it on any of your own beautiful eyes if you let me.

I give up. I only made it to four and one didn’t really count since it was Abe’s cool idea of quirks. I thought for sure that as I began typing wonderful little fun facts about myself would begin spewing out of my mind, but I got nothin.’ Oh well, now, as tradition goes, I tag all of you who actually were able to think of a quirk of your own as you read this.

I am so glad that you got tagged because I was going to tag you but I know you have so much on your mind what with the baby in your belly and the moving and such that I didn't think I should because I didn't want to stress you out. And I think you are super cool so that means that in and of itself you are quirky.

One thing you forgot to mention is that you let you smaller ones play with pruning shears and axes! That is something REALLY quirky!

You know how I've never really met you in person? Well, I like to now think of you with smokey blue eye make-up. You went from quirky to slutty in my mind just with this one post.

Oh how I burst out with loud laughter at your last unexpected sentence. Thank you thank you. That was just what I needed for this post -- a little more spice.

oh ho ho. now i'm really laughing.

that is cool that mike is going to 'observe' you over the next few days.

is it quirky that you worry a lot? and you definitely have an unusual attitude (quirk) towards mini marshmallows.

you are way cool!

I'm just wondering about that first quirk. Do you choke on food, as in it goes down your trachea, or does your food get stuck in your esophagus, so that you can't swallow? If it is the latter, come for a little visit to see me. That is my nursing specialty. I will fix you up. No, seriously, I have stretched many esophaguses in my GI career. It won't hurt a bit, I promise.

I'm so so so happy you were tagged. That was one of the funniest posts I've read in a long time. I was laughing out loud. I even read excerpts of it to my husband (which was probably really annoying for him).

I feel like I remember Jessica saying you don't like the sound of words that start with "Na". Is this true or am I making it up? If it is true that is definitely quirky.

Liz, really? Is it simple?? Because yes, it is my esophagus. Food just gets stuck all the time and it is miserable. I didn't know if whatever Tony got done years ago was some bizzarre procedure or what, but how great would that be if I didn't have to run out of gatherings before gagging on the food stuck in my throat all of the time!!

Jocelyn, oh my goodness, yes, I'd nearly forgotten how yucky words like nasty and nappy always sounded to me . . . and so that made it hard to love my own precious name for some time!

Oh I can't possibly respond to all your new posts I just read but I laughed at your quirks and that photo of Abe's head coming out of the shirt and then I saw Penny in a photo and she looks just like you and that photo of the kids in the water at sunset...and Goldie's birthday--she looks ten times older than at Christmas and I love her pig-tails and where are new photos of my Daisy...and your husband is funny and it is 2am and I am going to die tomorrow....sadly this is the only hour I will write on my blog or someone elses....but please remember how I hate the word "pimple" and "nibble"...oooh, just writing them bugs me to no end...

I missed your first quirk until I read Liz's and then I was like, whoa, that isn't a quirk that is a SERIOUS medical condition. Ok, not that serious, but you do need some help. I too, have worked GI (endoscopy lab) and have assisted Dr. in "stretching" throats. My mother in law used to choke all the time as well and she would have to take me to the bathroom to keep her calm so she could get it down, and then I made her go to the dr. Also, chicken and bread are the most common culprits of people coming in to the ER with food stuck in their throats. Ok, enough of that. You have lots of quirks. Like your exaggerating ability ( I think that is kind of quirky), the fact that you have CHICKENS, and your ability to understand animals (not many people do), your uncanny ability to just make everything so funny.

What about your peep obsession? What about your alter ego "Linda, Linda"? Most importantly, what about your secret love of the pipe cleanered fro that you wish you could sport all the time?

Thanks thanks for tellin me that I do have quirks. I feel much much better now.

yeah and what about how you hate when someone "saw you out jogging"? You get all crazy and start scratching people's eyes out....I would call this behavior a bit quirky.

Hee hee that was so funny...I thought for a minute you were leading in the direction of one of your real quirks. Mixing something with anything soft your eating like yogurt or ice cream... I would always catch you putting cereal, marshmellows etc in that stuff. Theres a quirk....
How about how you hate being depansed...that a quirk, everyone loves to be depansed once in a while...O if I sit here long enough I could probably come up with millions of quirks...hee hee...
